Biography
Jorvan Vieira has got a really diverse CV, crowned with international titles, both as the main coach and as an assistant , since his debut in 1977 at Associação Atlética Portuguesa, from Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian club he also represented as a football player.
After acting as an assistant coach for Qatar Sports Club, the Oman Olympic team was his second job as an immigrant, in 1982/83, having almost 20 years later returned to coach their under 20s. There he was also assistant coach for the first team. In 1985 he had his debut in Morocco, one of the most symbolic countries in Jorvan Vieira’s career. Just a year later he would be taking part in the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico as assistant coach for this Northern African country. Morocco, which hadn’t been at the World Cup finals since 1970, beat Portugal 3 – 1, in the last game of the group stage, and finished in first place. Before that, they had drawn goalless against Poland and England. In the knockout stage they performed well, but Germany, then the Federal Republic of Germany, who would go on to win the World title, beat them 1- 0. Vieira remained in the post until 1989.
Jorvan Vieira coached the Moroccan Olympic Team in 1985 and, up to 1993, represented clubs such as FAR, Tihad and Itthiad Tanger. He significantly won three titles of Moroccan champion, the same number of cups in this country, and took part in the African Champions League wearing FAR and Casablanca’s WAC’s colours, in the latter’s case as a technical director.
He also acted as technical director for KACM and was assistant coach at the Royal Army Force Team. In 94/95 he managed fifth place, as assistant coach for Sp. Farense from Portugal I League. In Portugal he had his debut at MAC Atlético Clube and worked also for Paredes and Sp. Espinho.
Egypt is another African country which has an outstanding place in Jorvan’s curriculum. Within twenty years, between 1999 and 2019, he has coached Ismaily, twice, Zamalek, one of the most important clubs in Africa, and Smouha. There he has celebrated winning the League and guaranteed a runners-up place.
Jorvan Vieira’s had his debut in Kuwait, as a coach for Al-Qadsia, in 98/99, there he celebrated the champion title and would eventually go back to this country to train its national team from 2013 to 2015. It was in this country that he classified for the Asian Cup, in 2015, which took place in Australia. From 2000 to 2001, Jorvan acted as a head coach for the Oman Olympic team and classified this team for the Under 20s Asian Cup in Iran. He coached the Malaysian under 20 tem, from 2001 to 2004, having also coached the main Malaysan team In Oman, he coached Al-Nassr and in the 2005/2006 season, he made his debut in Saudi Arabia working for Al-Tai.
In 2007 and 2009, he was Iraq’s head coach when he remarkably secured a victory at the Asian Cup, on the first of these two years. On the final, the Iraqis beat Saudi Arabia by 1-0, while in-between his two seasons in Iraq, Jorvan Vieira travelled to their eternal rival and neighbour Iran to coach Foodlad Sepahan, which guaranteed them the Iranian runners-up place.
