Bani Yas coach Jorvan Vieira has confirmed David Trezeguet could recover in time to make the start of the UAE Pro League season on October 15.
The 33-year-old striker who won the World Cup and European Cup with France in 1998 and 2000, respectively, is out for another week with what Vieira only describes as a ‘muscular injury’.
The former Platense, Monaco, Juventus and Hercules star remains in the UAE, choosing not to go abroad for specialist treatment, and will not be out for weeks with an ankle fracture as rumours suggested. The club will not be pursuing a replacement.
Vieira told Gulf News: “He’ll be back very soon, one week maximum according to the information I have received. It is muscular not an ankle fracture. All players get injured from time to time, that’s the risk you take when playing football. This is just another of those cases.”
Decisions
“There’s no need to find a replacement for Trezeguet if he’s not leaving the club permanently. Only if he’s not staying with us will I need to find a replacement,” said Vieira. Meanwhile, the Brazilian coach who was given Iraqi citizenship after guiding their national team to their 2007 Asian Cup triumph, said he still had until November 10 to chose his fourth foreign professional behind Trezeguet, Fawzi Bashir and Andre Senghor.
Meanwhile, Al Wasl Club were neither in a position to confirm or deny speculation yesterday that Diego Maradona was looking to sign Manchester City’s want-away striker Carlos Tevez for the Zabeel outfit.
A club spokesperson, following an article in the Daily Star, said: “None of the club officials are available to comment at this time in order to deny it or not. But this will no doubt be covered in Mr. Maradona’s post-match conference at the weekend.”
